My morning routine revolves around cycling through a series of news and informational websites to keep up to date on the occurrences of the world. In my browsing, I’m often drawn to a celebrity gossip social media website. This morning, as I clicked onto the site and started to browse the content, the thought occurred to me, “Why am I so intrigued by celebrity gossip? Am I actually interested in information on the lives of strangers? Does it make me feel like I know them personally if I follow what’s happening in their life? Or, do I just follow their lives because I believe that‘s what I’m supposed to do based on influence from family, friends and media?”
Some celebrities have actually made great strides in their life; they have made an impact on a generation, a social perspective or a world in need through their actions. These individuals are intriguing. They’ve accomplished great things and have become rather admirable. Celebrities that have created a better world are worthy of my attention.
We all take on significant tasks everyday that impact the world in which we live. The gravity of our decisions, actions and expressions are no greater or insignificant than anyone else. We influence the world around us. Our circle may be smaller than that of a movie star, but the people in our lives are still affected. Even though you may not wear the right clothes, possess loads of money or have a particular body shape, you still deserve recognition for your incredible accomplishments. One of my favorite quotes comes from Marianne Williamson says:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
Celebrities, you and me all have something great to accomplish. As Desmond Tutu says, we are all made for goodness. We all are to seek a status worthy of attention from the world, not because we did something degrading, but because we did something great, unforgettable and notable. And sometimes the most significantly notable actions are the smallest and most heartfelt.
I want to hear what you do every day that impacts the people in your life. Shoot me an email, #MelindaLaging on social media, or leave a comment! It would be an honor to encourage you on our journey to greatness!
